Databases on the rates of emission of anthropogenic compounds to the atmosphere. To calculate the effects of these emissions, inventories are made available by various agencies, based on statistics regarding amounts of fuel combusted, percentages of various gases typically found in the emissions, etc.
Industry:Weather
Chart that presents analyses of the changes of atmospheric pressure during a specific time interval.
Industry:Weather
Chemical term describing alternative forms of the same element, differing by the number of neutrons in the nucleus. Isotopes of the same element only differ in their masses and usually have very similar chemical properties. Small differences in chemical reaction rates may be associated with the differing masses.
Industry:Weather
Branch of fluid mechanics that deals with the flow of water in open channels, closed conduits, hydraulic structures, and hydraulic machines (pumps, turbines, presses, etc. ).
Industry:Weather
As used by C. W. Thornthwaite in his 1948 climatic classification, an index of the degree of water surplus over water need at any given station. It is calculated, independent of the opposing aridity index, as follows:
where s (the water surplus) is the sum of the monthly differences between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration for those months when the normal precipitation exceeds the latter, and n (the water need) is the sum of monthly potential evapotranspiration for those months of surplus. The humidity index has two uses in Thornthwaite's classification: 1) as a component of the moisture index; and 2) as a basis for detailed classification of dry climates.
Industry:Weather
Characterized by equal or constant pressure, with respect to either space or time.
Industry:Weather
Change in a carrier signal intensity for the purpose of transmitting information. See modulation.
