An inflatable sphere released at apogee from a sounding rocket. The sphere is inflated by evaporation of a contained liquid on release. A corner reflector is ejected as the sphere inflates, permitting track during descent by a precision radar. Winds and density data are derived from the position and fall velocity of the sphere. (“Robin” is an acronym for “rocket-balloon-instrument. ”)
Industry:Weather
An instrument that automatically determines the raindrop size distribution. See disdrometer.
Industry:Weather
An instrument that automatically records as a function of time the voltage applied to it. It is frequently used in meteorology in conjunction with thermocouples to record temperature.
Industry:Weather
An instrument system for measuring sea levels; tidal changes of levels are detected by the movement of a float in a well, which is connected to the open sea by a restricted hole or narrow pipe. Wind waves are eliminated by the constriction of the connection.
Industry:Weather
An instrument that acquires multispectral measurements from which vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and humidity can be derived.
Industry:Weather
An instrument for taking photographs (spectroheliograms) of an image of the sun in monochromatic light. The wavelength of light chosen for this purpose corresponds to one of the Fraunhofer lines, usually the light of hydrogen and/or ionized calcium. A similar instrument used for visual, instead of photographic, observations is the spectrohelioscope.
Industry:Weather
An instrument for the measurement of both horizontal wind speed and direction, consisting of a propeller anemometer mounted on the windward end of a wind vane. The wind vane serves the dual purposes of measuring wind direction and aligning the propeller axis in the direction of the wind.
Industry:Weather
An instrument for studying, or examining substances in, polarized light. See Savart polariscope.
Industry:Weather
An instrument for measuring the wind speed by determining the force (usually by measurement of mechanical deflection) on a suspended plate exposed to the airstream. In sensitive devices for rapid response turbulence measurements, a feedback system may be used to generate an appropriate restoring force to maintain the plate at its equilibrium position.

An instrument for measuring the vertical depth of snow. The eight-inch rain gauge is adapted for snow measurement by removing the funnel and measuring tube so that snow is collected in the overflow can. The weighing rain gauge is also used for measuring snowfall by removing the funnel portion of the collector. Other instruments used for measuring snow depth include the snow sampler and snow stake.
