Company Profile:
McGraw Hill Financial, Inc. is an American publicly traded corporation headquartered in Rockefeller Center in New York City. Its primary areas of business are financial, publishing, and business services.
A mathematical element used to describe quantities having magnitude and direction. It can be represented by a directed line segment. Vectors are widely used in mathematical physics.
Industry:Science
A mathematical entity consisting of a set of values (the carrier set) and a collection of operations that manipulate them. For example, the Integer abstract data type consists of a carrier set containing the positive and negative whole numbers and 0, and a collection of operations manipulating these values, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, equality comparison, and order comparison.
Industry:Science
A mathematical model of computing. The versatility of modern computers and their applications to the study of complex and dynamic systems, such as financial markets, cellular growth, and communication networks, raise questions about the ultimate power of computers. For example, what are the limitations, if any, on the tasks that we can ask computers to perform? Can we use computers to carry out any computational task we want? To answer such questions, we generally make use of abstract mathematical models. One of the most important mathematical abstract models that has been widely used to simulate objects and processes such as computer and digital circuits is automata theory.
Industry:Science
A mathematical operation performed on a function to determine the effect of a change in the value of the independent variable. Functions of one variable are considered in this article. For differentiation of functions of several variables
Industry:Science
A mathematical technique, often done graphically, by which accelerations of parts of a mechanism are determined. In high-speed machines, particularly those that include cam mechanisms, inertial forces may be the controlling factor in the design of members. An acceleration analysis, based upon velocity analysis, must therefore precede a force analysis. Maximum accelerations are of particular interest to the designer. Although an analytical solution might be preferable if exact maxima were required, graphical solutions formerly tended to be simpler and to facilitate visualization of relationships. Today, for advanced problems certainly, a computer solution, possibly one based on graphical techniques, is often more effective and can also produce very accurate graphical output.
Industry:Science
A mathematical term referring to the study of collections or sets. Consider a collection of objects (such as points, dishes, equations, chemicals, numbers, or curves). This set may be denoted by some symbol, such as <i>X</i>. It is useful to know properties that the set <i>X</i> has, irrespective of what the elements of <i>X</i> are. The cardinality of <i>X</i> is such a property.
Industry:Science
A mathematical-graphical procedure that has for its purpose the visualization of structures and their exact representation in drawings. After analysis of the structure, each element is shown in the drawing in its exact geometrical relation to the other elements.

A matured carpel or group of carpels (the basic units of the gynoecium or female part of the flower) with or without seeds, and with or without other floral or shoot parts (accessory structures) united to the carpel or carpels. Carpology is the study of the morphology and anatomy of fruits. The ovary develops into a fruit after fertilization and usually contains one or more seeds, which have developed from the fertilized ovules. Parthenocarpic fruits usually lack seeds. Fruitlets are the small fruits or subunits of aggregate or multiple fruits. Flowers, carpels, ovaries, and fruits are, by definition, restricted to the flowering plants (angiosperms), although fruitlike structures may enclose seeds in certain other groups of seed plants. The fruit is of ecological significance because of seed dispersal.
Industry:Science
A means for converting stored energy into work. Stationary power plants such as electric generating stations are located near sources of stored energy, such as coal fields or river dams, or are located near the places where the work is to be performed, as in cities or industrial sites. Mobile power plants for transportation service are located in vehicles, such as gasoline engines in automobiles and diesel locomotives for railroads. Power plants range in capacity from a fraction of a horsepower (hp) to over 106 kW in a single unit (<b>Table 1</b>). Large power plants are assembled, erected, and constructed on location from equipment and systems made by different manufacturers. Smaller units are produced in manufacturing facilities.
Industry:Science
A means for holding mating mechanical parts in fixed position relative to each other. In the case of a force fit of cylindrical parts, the inner member has a greater diameter than the hole of the outer member; that is, the metals of the two parts interfere.
