Biomining uses microorganisms to recover metals of value, such as gold, silver, and copper, from sulfide minerals. A technically and commercially proven process, biomining is acknowledged by the global mining industry as being cost-effective, simple to use, robust, less environmentally polluting than smelting or mineral roasting practices, and highly suitable for remote and inaccessible regions of the world.

Digitizing and retrieving information with a computer is the latest development in the quest to organize and retrieve the intellectual and artistic products of humankind. Computers can search for single words, parts of words, or combinations of words. Those words may be subject headings, descriptors, or keywords. The search can burrow through indexes and catalogs, databases, or complete documents (fulltext).

Element number 97, symbol Bk, the eighth member of the actinide series of elements. In this series the 5<i>f</i> electron shell is being filled, just as the 4<i>f</i> shell is being filled in the lanthanide (rare-earth) elements. These two series of elements are very similar in their chemical properties, and berkelium, aside from small differences in ionic radius, is especially similar to its homolog terbium.

Equipment used in the production and processing of milk and milk products, including milking machines, cream separators, coolers, pasteurizers, homogenizers, butter-making equipment, evaporators and dryers, and related items of equipment. The equipment must be easy to clean and designed to prevent contamination of the milk or milk products from dirt, oil, soluble metals, insects, and other foreign materials.

Extraordinary variation can be found within the plant kingdom, but how do extreme new forms arise? Although new mutations are generally thought of as the primary source of variation, they are not always necessary. In many cases, simply crossing two relatively similar varieties of plants will yield at least a few offspring with dramatically different traits. This phenomenon is called transgressive segregation.

Artificial satellites used for a variety of military purposes. Of approximately 4000 satellites successfully launched between 1957 and 1999, about 50% have been either specifically military or usable for military purposes. Major functions of military satellites include communications, positioning and navigation, meteorology, reconnaissance and surveillance, early warning, remote sensing, geodesy, and research.

Any one of the special bacterial enzymes involved in regulatory functions. End-product inhibition is a bacterial control mechanism whereby the end product of a biosynthetic pathway can react with the first enzyme of the pathway and prevent its activity. This end-product inhibition is a device through which a cell conserves its economy by shutting off the synthesis of building blocks when too many are present.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are materials added to or treatments applied to products or materials that significantly increase their resistance to catching fire. BFRs are used in a variety of consumer products, and several of those are produced in large quantities. Some BFRs have been detected in environmental matrices and human tissue, which can be attributed to the anthropogenic uses of these compounds.

Eastern North American monarch butterflies (<i>Danaus plexippus</i>) use a time-compensated sun compass to navigate south during their spectacular fall migration. Recent experiments show that the circadian clocks that provide time compensation for the sun compass mechanism reside in the antennae and not in the brain. This surprising finding poses a novel clock-compass connection that may apply widely to insects.
Industry:Science
Electric current which flows in one direction only through a circuit or equipment. The associated direct voltages, in contrast to alternating voltages, are of unchanging polarity. Direct current corresponds to a drift or displacement of electric charge in one unvarying direction around the closed loop or loops of an electric circuit. Direct currents and voltages may be of constant magnitude or may vary with time.
