Imaging mass spectrometry (MS) has a unique ability to acquire molecule- and element-specific pictures on a micrometer to submicrometer spatial regime. It has created fascinating opportunities in many research fields, including biochemistry, biotechnology, microelectronics, materials science, and geochemistry. Indeed, the trend toward miniaturization in many areas has driven the mass spectrometry community to improve the sensitivity and the spatial (position) resolution of imaging techniques.

Dysfunction of the respiratory system, which supplies the body with the oxygen needed for metabolic activities in the cells and removes carbon dioxide, a product of cellular metabolism. For this purpose the right ventricle of the heart pumps venous blood, containing carbon dioxide, through the pulmonary arteries into the lung capillaries, where gaseous exchanges between the blood and air occur. The arterial or oxygenated blood is then drained through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium.

Anthropologists study human biology to better understand the extent of human biological variability, to explain the mechanisms that create and pattern this variability, to relate variability to health and disease, and to understand the sociocultural factors that interact with, and are influenced by, our biology. The major areas of study of human biological variation are growth and development, genetic variation, variation related to climate, infectious and noninfectious diseases, and demography.

For about 100 years, chemicals obtained as by-products in the primary processing of coal to metallurgical coke were the main source of aromatic compounds used as intermediates in the synthesis of dyes, drugs, antiseptics, and solvents. However, over 97% of the aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes, are now obtained largely from petroleum. Naphthalene, phenanthrene, heterocyclic hydrocarbons such as pyridines and quinolines, and some phenols are still obtained from coal tar.

Hydrogen has been the prototypical system of the insulator-to-metal transition ever since it was predicted in 1935 that the insulating molecular solid would transform to a conducting monatomic solid at sufficiently high pressure and density at absolute zero temperature (0 K). So far, metallization of solid hydrogen has not been observed. However, fluid hydrogen has recently been observed to become metallic at pressures above 140 gigapascals (1.4 megabars) and temperatures of about 3000 K (4900°F).
Industry:Science
Commercial production of manufactured artificial ice from water, or of dry ice from the solidification of carbon dioxide, by mechanical refrigeration. Of great economic importance was the manufacture of water ice for use in refrigeration units, fishing boats, fish- and meat-packing plants, and dairies. However, there was a sharp increase in the trend toward cubing, sizing, and packaging of ice. The domestic ice market practically vanished with development of the automatic household refrigerator.

Designing and writing computer programs, or sequences of instructions to be executed by a computer. A computer is able to perform useful tasks only by executing computer programs. A programming language or a computer language is a specialized language for expressing the instructions in a computer program. A person engaged in computer programming is commonly called a programmer. Two major stages can be identified in a typical process to develop a computer program: problem solving and implementation.

Contact between bodies such that the relative velocity of the two contacting surfaces at the point of contact is zero. Common applications of rolling contact are the friction gearing of phonograph turntables, speed changers, and wheels on roadways. Rolling contact mechanisms are, generally speaking, a special variety of cam mechanisms. An understanding of rolling contact is essential in the study of antifriction bearings. The concepts are also useful in the study of the behavior of toothed gearing.

Any polyp of the nearly 1000 anthozoan coelenterates belonging to the order Actiniaria. They occur intertidally and subtidally in marine and estuarine habitats, attached to solid substrates or burrowing into soft sediments. No fresh-water or truly planktonic species are known, though one genus, Minyas, secretes a float within its base and hangs suspended at the surface of the seas. Anemones may be very small, 0.04 in. (1 mm) long, to large individuals more than 3 ft (1 m) in length or diameter.

Devices which give an electrical signal in response to visible, infrared, or ultraviolet radiation. They are often used in systems which sense objects or encoded data by a change in transmitted or reflected light. Photoelectric devices which generate a voltage can be used as solar cells to produce useful electric power. The operation of photoelectric devices is based on any of the several photoelectric effects in which the absorption of light quanta liberates electrons in or from the absorbing material.
