The history of the Earth can be displayed in the form of a calendar which is based on the observation of rocks formed through time. Depending on the location, the formation of rocks has recorded different (regional) histories describing the magmatic, tectonic, hydrospheric, or biospheric evolutions, and thus different calendars have been generated. Geologists (stratigraphers) are attempting to unify these different calendars. Stratigraphers define rock units bracketed between two boundaries that can be correlated worldwide. The succession of these modern units is the global geological time scale.

Text-to-speech (TTS) systems are is used to transform written text in a given language into its spoken equivalent. That is, a TTS system converts an input sentence, which is usually a sequence of letters (as in English) or symbols (as in Chinese), into machine-generated speech. The input sentence may include details of linguistic representation such as phrasing, intonation, and stress. Unlike limited vocabulary systems, which produce only a small predefined set of possible utterances, open-domain TTS systems must be able to intelligently handle any input text with an unlimited set of vocabularies.

The frontiers of our knowledge of the nuclear world advance continuously following progress in experimental techniques. The quest to reach very unstable nuclei at both the neutron-rich and the neutron-deficient limits of the chart of nuclei is motivated by expectations that the structure of an atomic nucleus changes when the imbalance between the number of neutrons and the number of protons increases. New features and new phenomena are expected. These generally pose a challenge to theoretical models that were developed to describe, and thoroughly tested with, nuclei in the vicinity of stable ones.

The ability to discriminate light on the basis of wavelength composition. It is found in humans, in other primates, and in certain species of birds, fishes, reptiles, and insects. These animals have visual receptors that respond differentially to the various wavelengths of visible light. Each type of receptor is especially sensitive to light of a particular wavelength composition. Evidence indicates that primates, including humans, possess three types of cone receptor, and that the cones of each type possess a pigment that selectively absorbs light from a particular region of the visible spectrum.
