The carbonate mineral CaMg(CO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>. Often small amounts of iron, manganese, or excess calcium replace some of the magnesium; cobalt, zinc, lead, and barium are more rarely found. The common name used for 15 species of large reptiles included in the family Crocodylidae, one of the three families of the order Crocodylia, which also includes the alligators, caimans, and gharials (also known as gavials). Like all crocodilians, the crocodiles are distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Species occur in both saltwater and freshwater habitats. Crocodiles are generally carnivorous, feeding on invertebrates, fish, other reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals. A few, very narrow snouted species are believed to subsist primarily on fish. Crocodiles are primarily aquatic and nocturnal, leaving the water only to bask by day or to build their nests. Some species construct burrows into the banks of rivers or lakes where they spend part of their time.

The interaction which occurs when a hydrogen atom, covalently bonded to an electronegative atom (as in A–H), interacts with another atom to form the aggregate A–H…Y. The shortest and strongest bond is indicated as A–H, while the secondary and weaker interaction is written as H…Y. Thus A–H is a proton donor, while (Y) is a proton acceptor which often contains lone pair electrons and can act as a base. The strongest hydrogen bonds are formed between the most electronegative (A) atoms such as fluorine, nitrogen, and oxygen which interact with (Y) atoms having electronegativity greater than that of hydrogen (C, N, O, S, Se, F, Cl, Br, I). The weakest of hydrogen bonds are formed by acidic protons of C–H groups, as in chloroform and acetylene, and by olefinic and aromatic π-electrons acting as (Y).

The bombardment of solid surfaces by fast neutral or ionized particles has been of interest for more than 100 years. This interest stems from the many important applications that depend on these processes. For example, electron emission initiated by particle impact on a converter surface permits detection of very small particle currents or even single-particle counting for highly sensitive mass spectrometry. Sputtering, that is, the removal of atomic constituents from a solid because of particle impact, is highly important in many fields, including space flight, thermonuclear fusion research, and semiconductor technology. Radiation damage in solids, which is caused by the impact of energetic particles, can, for example, be utilized in light-ion radiotherapy for the destruction of cancerous tissue.
