Company Profile:
McGraw Hill Financial, Inc. is an American publicly traded corporation headquartered in Rockefeller Center in New York City. Its primary areas of business are financial, publishing, and business services.
The passage of loose or watery stools (greater than 8 oz or 200 g per 24 h), usually at more frequent than normal intervals. The two principal mechanisms responsible for diarrhea are the rise in osmotic pressure of fecal contents, diminishing the absorption of water by the intestine (osmotic diarrhea); and the increase in electrolyte secretion into the intestinal lumen by its epithelial cells, leading to an increased flow of water from the intestinal mucosa into the lumen (secretory diarrhea).
Industry:Science
The measurement of water discharge in streams. Discharge is the rate of movement of the stream's water volume. It is the product of water velocity times cross-sectional area of the stream channel. Several techniques have been developed for measuring stream discharge; selection of the gaging method usually depends on the size of the stream. The most accurate methods for measuring stream discharge make use of in-stream structures through which the water can be routed, such as flumes and weirs.
Industry:Science
The protection of semiconductor electronic devices and electronic systems from the effects of high-energy radiation. Applications for such devices are in three major areas: (1) satellites, which are exposed to natural space radiation from the Van Allen belts, solar flares, and cosmic rays; (2) electronics, especially sensor and control electronics for commercial nuclear power-generating plants; and (3) perhaps most important, equipment designed to survive the radiation from nuclear explosions.
Industry:Science
The ratio of the radiation intensity of a nonblackbody to the radiation intensity of a blackbody. This ratio, which is usually designated by the Greek letter ε, is always less than or just equal to one. The emissivity characterizes the radiation or absorption quality of nonblack bodies. Published values are readily available for most substances. Emissivities vary with temperature and also vary throughout the spectrum. The springs and related parts intermediate between the wheels and the frame, subframe, or side rails of a unitized body. The suspension supports the weight of the upper part of a vehicle on its axles and wheels, allows the vehicle to travel over irregular surfaces with a minimum of up-and-down body movement, and allows the vehicle to corner with minimum roll or loss of traction between the tires and the road. Four types of spring used in automotive suspension are coil, leaf, torsion bar, and air.
Industry:Science
The study of human behavior and mental processes. Psychology is distinguished from similar fields of research and applied science by the unit of analysis, which is the individual. However, some psychological studies stretch this definition. For example, a study of group problem-solving may compare groups of different types, in which case the group is the unit of analysis. However, a psychological theory will still explain the effects by processes that apply at the level of individuals in a group.
Industry:Science
The time rate of change of position of a body in a particular direction. Linear velocity is velocity along a straight line, and its magnitude is commonly measured in such units as meters per second (m/s), feet per second (ft/s), and miles per hour (mi/h). Since both a magnitude and a direction are implied in a measurement of velocity, velocity is a directed or vector quantity, and to specify a given velocity completely, the direction must always be given. The magnitude only is called the speed.
Industry:Science
The point at which a substance changes from one state of aggregation to another. This general definition would include the melting point (transition from solid to liquid), boiling point (liquid to gas), or sublimation point (solid to gas); but in practice the term transition point is usually restricted to the transition from one solid phase to another, that is, the temperature (for a fixed pressure, usually 1 atm or 100 kilopascals) at which a substance changes from one crystal structure to another.
Industry:Science
The production, propagation, reflection, scattering, and reception of sound in seawater. The sea covers approximately 75% of the Earth's surface. In terms of exploration, visible observation of the sea is limited due to the high attenuation of light, and radar has very poor penetrability into salt water. Because of the extraordinary properties that sound has in the sea, and because of some of the inherent characteristics of the sea, acoustics is the principal means by which the sea has been explored.
Industry:Science
The study of fungi (molds and yeasts) that cause human disease. Some pathogenic molds and yeasts normally reside within soil or derive their nutrition from other organic matter until introduced into the body by inhalation or trauma; others are part of the normal body flora or are transmitted from an infected person. Because the immune status of the host plays an important role in susceptibility to fungal infection, highly immunodeficient persons are likely to develop an opportunistic fungal infection.
