The de Broglie wavelength associated with the center-of-mass motion of free atoms is usually so short that the atoms move like classical particles. However, if a gas is cooled to such a low temperature that the wavelength becomes comparable to the distance between atoms, quantum-mechanical features become important. If the total spin of the atom is an integer, the gas can undergo the quantum-mechanical phase transition known as Bose-Einstein condensation.
