adoptive tumor immunotherapy

Adoptive tumor immunotherapy is a new technology being developed for the treatment of cancer. This technology utilizes cells from the patient's immune system to destroy the cancerous cells that cannot be surgically removed. This unique therapy employs three steps. First, cells from the immune system that have potential to fight the tumor are isolated from the patient's blood, tumor, or lymph nodes. Second, these specialized cells are expanded in number and possibly functionally enhanced in culture. Third, these cells are reintroduced into the patient to kill the remaining tumor cells. The reintroduction of the cells into the patient has been termed adoptive cell transfer (ACT) therapy.
