The progress of humankind has been directly and indirectly dependent on materials. Periods of development in the archeological record, such as the Stone, Iron, and Bronze ages, reflect this. Since about 1970 there has been an unprecedented expansion in the number of new materials that have entered every aspect of human lives. The revolution in materials shows every sign of continuing, probably at an increased pace of development.
