A tropical and subtropical fruit tree, Persea americana, in the Lauraceae family (containing also the laurel of antiquity and the trees that yield commercial cinnamon and camphor). It originated in Central America or adjoining regions of North or South America. It has now spread to much of the near-tropical world.
