Circadian systems are natural phenomena whereby the biological functions of organisms are synchronized with the day-night cycle of their environment, allowing biological processes to anticipate environmental changes. This is thought to provide organisms with an adaptive advantage, and is present in animals, plants, fungi, and cyanobacteria.
