deep scattering layer

Applied to widespread strata in the ocean that scatter or return vertically directed sound as in echo depth sounding. These layers, which are evidently of biological origin, are located at depths ranging from 150 to 200 fathoms (274 to 366 m) during the day, with most of them migrating to or near the surface during the night.
