Design is a creative process of engineering synthetic solutions to satisfy human needs. In this sense, design is synonymous with engineering. Engineering design is undergoing a transition, driven by two complementary factors: the creation of the scientific basis of design, and industrial needs to shorten lead time, improve quality, and reduce the cost of new products. Many engineering problems can be solved when the basic scientific principles of design are applied. The science base enables designers of products and large engineering systems to perform their tasks on a logical, rational, and systematic basis (minimizing the trial-and-error process and empiricism). These changes have affected both design education and the practice of engineering in industry.
