earliest seafaring

Despite the importance of human seafaring in the history of global colonization, archeologists are uncertain about how, why, and when humans first began to use boats. Physical evidence for boats in the archeological record is sparse and late in time, and our understanding of seafaring is derived from dated archeological remains of earliest human occupation recovered from regions that could have been reached only via sea crossings.
