factor of safety

The ratio of the ultimate breaking strength of the material to the force exerted against it. If a rope will break under a load of 6,000 lb (2,724 kg), and it is carrying a load of 2,000 lb (908 kg), its factor of safety is 6,000/2,000 = 3, or f.s 3.
