While bacteria are frequently associated with food spoilage and food poisoning, some species preserve foods through fermentation or produce food ingredients. Food microbiology is a broad field that can include not only microbiology but also sanitation, epidemiology, biochemistry, engineering, statistics, and mathematical modeling.
