In the mining industry, geographic information systems (GIS) have become practical tools in recent years as desktop computing has become both more powerful and affordable. The advanced spatial capabilities of GIS make them particularly well suited for use in mine development, where spatial information is fundamental to the processes of mineral exploration, open-pit mine and underground mine planning and production, and environmental reclamation.
