geophysical fluid dynamics

The branch of physics that studies the dynamics of naturally occurring large-scale flows in both the atmosphere and oceans. Examples of such flows are weather patterns, atmospheric fronts, the Gulf Stream, coastal upwelling, and El Niño. The fluids are either air or water in a moderate range of temperatures and pressures.
