Consciousness has become an important subject of scientific research, due in part to the emergence of B. J. Baars' global workspace theory of consciousness. One direction of this research involves designing and building “conscious” software agents that implement global workspace theory. Such implementations serve to flesh out the theory and to provide testable hypotheses for cognitive scientists and cognitive neuroscientists.
