A chemical element, symbol Hs, atomic number 108. It was synthesized and identified in 1984 by using the Universal Linear Accelerator (UNILAC) at Darmstadt, West Germany, by the same team (led by P. Armbruster and G. Müzenberg) which first identified bohrium and meitnerium. The isotope ²⁶⁵Hs was produced in a fusion reaction by bombarding a ²⁰⁸Pb target with a beam of ⁵⁸Fe projectiles.
