Barite in southeast Missouri. Barite is an orthorhombic mineral, 4(BaSO4) ; has nearly pseudocubic cleavage; occurs as interpenetrant masses of crystals with sand and clay (desert roses); sp gr, 4.5; in veins or in residual masses on limestone; the principal source of barium.
