A honeybee colony comprising some 25,000 individuals must collect sufficient nectar and pollen to keep its members alive and warm through the winter. An individual load is only about 40 mg, yet in one year a colony harvests about 80 kg of nectar and 20 kg of pollen. A colony gathers forage over an area that can extend more than 10 km in all directions from the hive. The locations of profitable flower patches within this area shift from day to day, and the colony can track and exploit these fluctuating resources. The ability to perform this feat involves both social and individual intelligence.
