One of the three major groups of rocks that make up the crust of the Earth. The other two groups are igneous rocks and sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rocks are preexisting rock masses in which new minerals, or textures, or structures are formed at higher temperatures and greater pressures than those normally present at the Earth's surface.
