The first section of this article discusses the shallow-water or surf-zone coastal currents, specifically alongshore and rip currents. The second section discusses the findings of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, a long-term effort, as part of the World Climate Research Programme, to measure the flows of ocean currents. Research on ocean currents is providing critical information in a broad range of environmental topics, from localized coastal processes to changes in global climate.
