A tree, Pistacia vera, of the Anacardiaceae family. It is native to central Asia and has been grown for its edible nuts throughout recorded history in Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey and various other countries of the Mediterranean region. Extensive areas in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys of California were planted to pistachios in the 1970s, and the first commercial nut crop was harvested in 1977.
