Primates are our closest biological relatives. Therefore, we expect to find many similarities between primate and human communication. Primates primarily use vocal and visual modalities, as do humans, and some primate communication demonstrates impressive complexity. Nonetheless, primate communication differs from human communication, especially language, in important ways. This article focuses on natural communication processes in primates rather than artificial training to use sign language or computer symbols to mimic human language.
