An extinct order of primitive, mastodonlike, herbivorous, hoofed mammals restricted to the Eocene and Oligocene deposits of South America. There is only one family (Pyrotheriidae) in the order and four genera (Pyrotherium, Propyrotherium, Carlozittelia, and Griphodon) in the family.
