reconstructing environmental history

Most knowledge of past environments has come from the study of the physical, chemical, and biological remains found in the stratigraphic record. The modern environment also plays a key role in the interpretation of such remains. For this reason, the reconstruction of past environments has its foundations in the principle of uniformitarianism and the application of analogical reasoning.
