virtual testing of structures

It is generally accepted that vehicles (cars, aircraft, trains) are tested before being released for public use, both by the manufacturers and on occasion by the appropriate regulatory authorities to “certify” the vehicle. These tests are often major undertakings; for example, the crash of a car into a barrier at motorway speeds or the test to failure of an aircraft wing. The tests are instrumented, with cameras to record the event, strain gauges to measure material deformation, and load cells to track the forces applied to the structure.
