An apparatus which converts the energy in a fluid to mechanical energy by means of the expansion of the fluid (gas) against a piston. It normally includes a cylinder closed by a piston connected by means of a connecting rod to a crankshaft; a valve mechanism admits and discharges fluid at appropriate times in the cycle.
