Additional variables or parameters that would supplement quantum mechanics so as to make it like classical mechanics. Hidden variables would make it possible to unambiguously predict (as in classical mechanics) the result of a specific measurement on a single microscopic system. In contrast, quantum mechanics can give only probabilities for the various possible results of that measurement. Hidden variables would thus provide deeper insights into the quantum-mechanical probabilities. In this sense the relationship between quantum mechanics and hidden variables could be analogous to the relationship between thermodynamics (for example, temperature) and statistical mechanics (the motions of the individual molecules).

Adoptive tumor immunotherapy is a new technology being developed for the treatment of cancer. This technology utilizes cells from the patient's immune system to destroy the cancerous cells that cannot be surgically removed. This unique therapy employs three steps. First, cells from the immune system that have potential to fight the tumor are isolated from the patient's blood, tumor, or lymph nodes. Second, these specialized cells are expanded in number and possibly functionally enhanced in culture. Third, these cells are reintroduced into the patient to kill the remaining tumor cells. The reintroduction of the cells into the patient has been termed adoptive cell transfer (ACT) therapy.

Advanced analytical techniques are available to determine physical and electronic properties of deoxyribonucleic acid. Experiments on single DNA molecules have shown that their physical properties are described quite well by classical elasticity theory. Whether DNA is a good electron conductor is still open to debate, but recent experiments indicate that electron transport in DNA does occur.

Advanced ceramic materials that can withstand temperatures over 1500°C (2732°F) without degradation or oxidation are needed for applications such as structural parts for motor engines, gas turbines, catalytic heat exchangers, and combustion systems. Ceramic composites and coatings that are hard and oxidant resistant are in demand for use on aircraft and spacecraft.

Advances in computational technology have made computerized devices an integral part of our daily lives. Unfortunately, poorly designed interfaces often make these devices difficult and awkward to use. A conceptual framework for the design of effective human-computer interfaces will be outlined.

Advances in technology over the past 25 years have drastically changed the construction industry. Construction had resisted many attempts to restructure it from a craft-oriented to a modular production line endeavor. Until recently, buildings and facilities were designed and built using methods similar to those used by the court of Louis XV for the furnishings at Versailles. Pieces were designed and constructed as unique items by a team of crafts people. Although this approach is still conceptually true in the building industry, repetition and automation at many levels of the construction process have been introduced to increase efficiency and improve quality and productivity.

Aerodynamic decelerators are devices that are designed to produce drag and are made from textiles (as opposed to mechanical drag devices such as spoilers). The first parachute jump was in approximately 1785 and the first free-fall parachute jump, in 1919. The technology of aerodynamic decelerators is fairly mature. As with many aerospace systems, new applications require constant incremental improvement in performance and reduction in weight and volume.

Aeronomy concentrates on the regions above the tropopause or upper part of the atmosphere. The region of the atmosphere below the tropopause is the site of most of the weather phenomena that so directly affect all life on the planet; this region has primarily been the domain of meteorology.

Aerosols are suspensions of solid or liquid particles in air. The particles are sufficiently small that their settling due to gravity is minimal, leading to long residence times in the atmosphere. Their atmospheric significance is multifold. For example, they play an important role in polluted urban environments by lowering visibility and leading to health problems in humans. They also catalyze reactions that affect atmospheric chemical composition, leading, for example, to the Antarctic ozone hole.

Affinity chromatography is a separation method in which a biologically related binding agent is placed in a chromatographic column for use as a stationary phase. If the support material that contains this binding agent is a monolithic media, then the resulting technique is referred to as affinity monolith chromatography (AMC). This combination of a monolithic support with a biologically related stationary phase offers increased performance and ease of structural modification over other forms of affinity chromatography.
