Members of the order Orectolobiformes (carpet sharks), share the following characteristics: two dorsal fins without spines; a short snout that leaves the mouth terminal or almost terminal; and each nostril connected to the mouth by a deep groove, the anterior margin having a well-developed barbel. The classification hierarchy is:

Class Chondrichthyes

Subclass Elasmobranchii

Superorder Euselachii

Order Orectolobiformes

Product exuded from the leaves of the wax palm, Copernicia cerifera (Palmae), a native of Brazil and other regions in tropical South America. The wax accumulates on the surface of the leaves; these are cut from the trees and dried, whereupon the layer of wax becomes loose and is easily removed by flailing. It is the hardest, highest-melting natural wax and is used in making candles, shoe polish, high-luster wax, varnishes, phonograph records, and surface coating of automobiles.

Lattice theory deals with properties of order and inclusion, much as group theory treats symmetry. As a generalization of boolean algebra, lattice theory was first applied around 1900 by R. Dedekind to algebraic number theory; however, its recognition as a major branch of mathematics, unifying various aspects of algebra, geometry, and functional analysis, as well as of set theory, logic, and probability (to which boolean algebra had already been applied), dates from the years 1933–1938.

Marine sponges that are able to erode calcareous substrates such as coral, mollusk shells, and limestone, also called boring or excavating sponges. Confirmed eroders belong to the families Samidae, Thoosidae, Clionaidae, Spirastrellidae, Acarnidae, and Phloeodictyidae, which are all demosponges. The best-known species belong to the genera Cliona, Pione, and Aka. Species are identified by their skeletal elements, morphology, tissue characteristics, and erosion traces.

It has long been common practice to distinguish between data, information, and knowledge. Information is data arranged in meaningful patterns such that it is potentially useful for decision making. Knowledge is something that is believed, and is true, effective, and reliable. Knowledge is necessarily associated with an experiential context, and so is generally more valuable than information. However, knowledge is much harder to assimilate, understand, transfer, and share than information.

Mass extinctions have become a major focus of research within the geological sciences during the past two decades, with much attention focusing on the causes of these events. However, it is only recently that the nature of the aftermath and recovery intervals following these biotic crises has attracted interest. Such studies are relevant to our understanding of the long-term impact of human activities on global biodiversity and modern ecosystem response to major environmental perturbations.

Materials that have the ability to heal automatically have been a dream of engineers and scientists for a long time. After long periods of use cracks will form and propagate in materials, eventually leading to mechanical failures, some of which (such as airplane crashes) could be catastrophic. In addition, micro-cracks are always hidden deep within materials. For decades, scientists worldwide have been looking for materials that can heal themselves after crack formation, especially polymers.

It is commonly believed that vision is a unified, coherent sense; that people perceive objects and surfaces, manipulate objects under visual guidance, and move around using visual information that is seamless and integrated. This notion, however, is false. There are at least two pathways for visual information in the brain, each with its own representation of visual space. These representations have distinct functions, and under some conditions they can hold contradictory spatial information.

Large groupings of stars with dimensions of 1000 to several thousand light-years. Star clouds are not stable clusterings of stars or even groups of a common origin, such as stellar associations. Instead, they are large areas where the stellar density is higher than average in a galaxy. They are nevertheless physical entities in that they result from large-scale star formation events or series of events that are to some extent limited in size by the characteristics of the galactic environment.

Scenario-based design is a family of techniques in which the use of a future system is concretely described at an early point in the development process. Narrative descriptions of envisioned usage episodes are then employed in a variety of ways to guide the development of the system. Scenario-based design changes the focus of design work from defining system operations (that is, functional specification) to describing how people will use a system to accomplish work tasks and other activities.
