Neanderthals are the closest evolutionary relatives of modern humans. Based on fossil and archeological records, they are large-brained people with a distinct body plan and skull morphology compared to modern humans, associated with Mousterian (Middle Paleolithic) stone tools. Neanderthals had dominated in Europe and western and central Asia for 200,000 years, until their population declined for unknown reasons. After retreating to isolated refuges in southern Europe, they finally died out approximately 28,000 years ago.

One of three species of striped, horselike mammals belonging to the family Equidae and found wild in Africa. Zebras are classified in the order Perissodactyla (odd-toed ungulates), a group of mammals in which the middle toe is functional and the second and fourth digits are vestigial. All equids walk on the tips of their toes (unguligrade locomotion). Zebras stand 1.2 to 1.5 m (4–5 ft) high at the withers. Adults weigh 106–202 kg (235–450 lb). The dental formula is I 3/3, C 1/1, PM 3/3, M 3/3 × 2 for a total of 40 teeth.

One of a family of microwave generators, also called cyclotron resonance masers, in which cyclotron resonance coupling between microwave fields and an electron beam in vacuum is the basis of operation. This type of coupling has the advantage that both the electron beam and the associated microwave structures can have dimensions which are large compared with a wavelength. Thus, cyclotron resonance masers are potentially greatly superior to conventional microwave tubes with respect to power capability at short wavelengths.

Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) are a transistorless approach to carrying out digital computing with nanoscale devices. The QCA cell is a structure comprising a small number of locations called dots, which can hold electrons, and the arrangement of charge among these dots represents binary information. Because no electric current flows from cell to cell, the QCA approach constitutes a radical departure from conventional electronics, one which may prove more suitable for computing at the nanometer and molecular scales.

One of the largest recognized groups of early amphibians with about 180 described genera. The Temnospondyli first appear in the fossil record in the lower Carboniferous and reach substantial diversity in the later Carboniferous and Permian. The end-Permian extinction event wiped out several families, but the surviving lineages rediversified and temnospondyls remained numerous through the Triassic before declining in the later Mesozoic, the last survivor (<i>Koolasuchus</i>) being known from the mid-Cretaceous of Australia.

Silicate phase equilibria relations are used by geologists, ceramists, and cement manufacturers to explain the variation of composition of silica-bearing minerals, as well as their number and order of appearance in rocks, slags, glasses, and cements. Silicate phase equilibria relations are also useful to interpret the chemistry of refractories, boiler scale deposits, and welding fluxes.

Single crystals that have grown in filamentary form. Such filamentary growths have been known for centuries and can form by a variety of mechanisms. Some grow from their base: either these are extruded to relieve pressure in the base material or they grow as a result of a chemical reaction at the base. In both cases, the growth occurs at a singularity in the base material. Other crystal whiskers grow at their tip, into a supersaturated medium, and the filamentary growth results from a strong anisotropy in the growth rate.
