The eighteenth of the synthetic transuranium elements, symbol Ds, atomic number 110. Darm-stadtium should be a heavy homolog of the elements platinum, palladium, and nickel. It is the eighth element in the 6<i>d</i> shell. The various isotopes of darmstadtium have been reliably documented by the observation of at least four isotopes with half-lives in the range of milliseconds, a time too short for the application of chemical methods, verifying its position in the periodic system.

The combined structures composing the urinary and genital, or reproductive, organs of vertebrates. The terms urinogenital or genitourinary system are equally applicable and just as frequently used. During embryonic development, the urinary and reproductive systems are closely interrelated, as their ducts arise in associated mesodermal regions. Common passages are associated with both these systems in various vertebrates, such as the single orifice for emission of urine and sperm.

The largest phylum in the animal kingdom, including the well-known insects, spiders, ticks, and crustaceans, as well as many smaller, less well-known groups, and an abundance of strange forms known only as fossils. Arthropods make up about 95% of all species of animals. The estimated number of known species exceeds 1 million; of this number, most are insects. No one really knows the exact number of arthropod species. Some authorities estimate that it may range as high as 10 million.

Structural experiments play an important role in earthquake engineering research for understanding the behavior of buildings and other structures subjected to earthquake forces. As the scale and complexity of modern structural experiments increase, the existing earthquake engineering laboratories, which are often faced with limited resources (such as space and equipment), inevitably become incapable of satisfying the demand of various types of large-scale and complicated experiments.

Text, numerals, sound, or images (both moving and still) that are either stored or transmitted in a binary form and have potential use as evidence to prove a circumstance or event in a court of law. Binary refers to the electronic code made up of ones and zeroes that defines all the digital information. A unit of information is assigned one of two states, either 1 or 0 (that is, on and off). Thes two digits used in groups of 8 with varying sequences, for example, define the alphabet.

The <i>Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE)</i> explores the dynamics and evolution of the solar atmosphere from the photosphere to the corona with high temporal and spatial resolution. The <i>TRACE</i> Observatory produces images of the Sun in the ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, corresponding to a temperature range from 5 × 103 to 2.5 × 106 K. Flare plasma at 2 × 107 K is also imaged when present.

The integrated services digital network completes the end-to-end digital transmission capability of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). For more than a century the cable pair of copper wires has been used only for two-way analog voice communication, but as a result of digital technology it may now be used for new services. These services take advantage of the more robust digital signals, not only for digitized voice transmission but also for other bidirectional digital signals.

The change in steady-state speed of a machine, expressed in percent of rated speed, when the load on the machine is reduced from rated value to zero. The definition of regulation usually means the net change in a steady-state characteristic, and does not include any transient deviation or oscillation that may occur prior to reaching the new operation point. This same definition is used for stating the speed regulation of electric motors and for certain prime movers, such as steam turbines.

The first section of this article discusses the shallow-water or surf-zone coastal currents, specifically alongshore and rip currents. The second section discusses the findings of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, a long-term effort, as part of the World Climate Research Programme, to measure the flows of ocean currents. Research on ocean currents is providing critical information in a broad range of environmental topics, from localized coastal processes to changes in global climate.

The largest fraction of what is called “weather” in the extratropics is delivered by the development and propagation of mid-latitude weather systems. These disturbances, commonly referred to as “lows” and “highs,” develop in response to a fundamental instability of the westerlies, known as baroclinic instability, that arises from the permanent but seasonally modulated pole-to-equator temperature contrast. The lows in this endless sequence of disturbances are known as mid-latitude cyclones.
