The Transamerica Pyramid is the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco and one of the most iconic buildings in the city's skyline. The tower was named after the insurance company Transamerica Corporation who commissioned its construction to serve as the company's headquarters office. Designed by architect William Pereira and built by Dinwiddie Construction Company, the building was completed in 1972 at a height of 850 ft (260 m), making it one of the five tallest buildings in the world at the time. The original plan called for the building to have a height of 1,150 feet, but the city planning commission rejected it because it would block views of the San Francisco bay from Nob Hill.

The Transamerica Pyramid is located in the heart of the Montgomery Financial District in San Francisco, California. It is a part of Transamerica Center (a complex that includes Two Transamerica Center and Transamerica Redwood Park) and encompasses nearly one city block. The tower has no public access except for the first floor lobby, thus visitors cannot ascend to the top for a panoramic view. Although the building no longer houses the headquarters of the Transamerica Corporation, who moved their U.S. headquarters to Baltimore, MD, it is still strongly associated with the company and is depicted in the company's logo.
